Enterprise SSD interface and form-factor checklist
Protocol, connector, physical size and carrier requirements must line up. “Enterprise SSD” alone is not a procurement specification.
What should a buyer confirm?
Before RFQ, record the complete PN, protocol (SATA, SAS or NVMe), interface generation, physical form factor, carrier or backplane requirement, capacity, quantity and target platform. Never infer the connector only from the word NVMe or from capacity.
Catalog comparison
| Catalog path | Interface examples | Physical checks |
|---|---|---|
| SATA SSD | SATA 6Gb/s | 2.5-inch bay, carrier, thickness |
| SAS SSD | SAS 24Gb/s | SAS controller/backplane, dual-port requirement, carrier |
| NVMe SSD | PCIe 4.0 x4 or PCIe 5.0 x4 | U.2 or M.2 connector, backplane/slot, carrier and cooling |
Separate protocol from physical format
SATA and SAS identify interface families that also imply controller and backplane requirements. NVMe operates over PCIe, but an NVMe request still needs a physical form such as U.2 or M.2. The current catalog demonstrates this distinction because PM9A3 has records in both formats.
A 2.5-inch description also needs context. A SATA 2.5-inch drive and a U.2 2.5-inch NVMe drive can share a broad size label while requiring different connectors and backplanes.
Use the server documentation for final validation
Check the server, array or backplane documentation and any vendor qualification list before choosing a replacement. A matching slot alone does not establish support for the drive’s protocol, dimensions or configuration.
If the requirement is a replacement, include the existing PN and carrier details. If it is a new deployment, include the platform model, required usable capacity, expected workload context and quantity so the discussion starts with a clear technical requirement.
